Achnaha WoodsAchnaha Woods

Achnaha Wood is managed by Morvern Community Woodlands (MCW) in conjunction with Forestry Commission.  MCW have recently applied to the National Forest land Scheme to purchase the 8 hectares of woodland. MCW provide woodland education and recreation opportunities, and to promote woodland and timber-related skills within the community.

MonumentAoineadh Mòr

Discover a hidden settlement cleared in 1824.  This site above Loch Arienas, was rediscovered when the trees were felled in 1994.  There is a car park and well defined paths with interpretation boards.  There are other similar sites of interest at Uladil and Auliston.

Ardtornish Castle

Ardtornish Castle guards the entrance to Loch Aline and was built by MacDonald Lord of the Isles in the 13th century.  The castle is a distinctive landmark and visitors can still explore the ruins and enjoy fantastic views of the village of Lochaline and across the Sound of Mull.

Beaches

There are many beaches and coves along the coastline, mainly shingle.  A man made white sand beach, made with reject sand from the mine, lies in front of Lochaline Hotel.  The freshwater Loch Arienas also offers many easily accessible sandy coves.

Boat Trips  & Diving

Lochaline Boat Charters and Lochaline Dive Centre offer opportunities for Diving parties to discover the many wrecks in the area.  Boat trips are also available.

Caisteal nan Con

Caisteal na Con – Castle of the Dogs believed to have been built in the 17th century by Allan MacLean, the tacksman at Killundine. The remaining structure, located just below Killundine, is now in great disrepair and should be approached with caution, or indeed, viewed from a distance.

Clach na Criche

The Wishing Stone is located on the B849 about 4.5 miles west of the village.  There is a car park on the left about 200m from the stone with a picnic area where you can watch the traffic and marine life on the Sound of Mull. Take water from the nearby spring and pass through the opening in the stone to make your wish come true!

Drimnin Chapel

Built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Sound of Mull and Tobermory, the chapel was built in 1838 on the site of the former Drimnin Castle.  It became the centre of worship for Catholics from Mull and Ardnamurchan.  Recently restored and re-opened by HRH The Earl of Wessex in 2012.

Drimnin Water Taxi

A weekly water taxi service between Drimnin and Tobermory.  Booking is essential with Shirley on 01967 421700 or 07825542736.

Fishing

Ardtonish Estate and Fish Morvern offer loch and sea fishing for all abilities.

Kiel Church

Kiel Church stands in a stunning location above the village of Lochaline with breathtaking views across the Sound of Mull. Ruins of a medieval church are on the site of the original and much earlier building which, according to legend, was erected at the command of St Columba.  The nearby 18th-century session house contains a collection of carved stones 8th to 16th centuries.  To the south of the church and the session house, offering the very best views towards the island of Mull, is a tall disc-headed free-standing cross. This dates back to the 1300s and all its surfaces

Kinlochaline Castle

Situated at the head of Loch Aline, Kinlochaline Castle was once the seat of the MacInnes clan. It was largely destroyed by the army of Oliver Cromwell and restored in 1890.  It has now been converted to a private dwelling by present owner, Hugh Raven.

Lochaline Harbour Pontoons

Lochaline Harbour pontoons were opened in 2011 and shore facilities added in 2013.  Morvern Community Development Company facilitated the development and success has now led to a proposed expansion.

Morvern Games & Gala Week

The Highlight in the Morvern Calendar, Morvern Games & Gala Week starts with Morvern Games (Highland Games and Sports for all ages), held the 2nd Saturday following the first Monday in July, and is followed by a week full of events and activities, with fun for all, such as Regatta Day, Great Morvern Run, Indoor Bowls, Quiz Night, Duck Race, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Guided Walks, Ceilidh night, Producers’ Market, Bingo. Ncn’ean Distillery

Ncn’ean Distillery is a young independent distillery on the Morvern Peninsula creating experimental spirits and championing sustainable production. Ncn’ean, started distilling in March 2017 and offers daily tours during the working week. 
Tours must be pre-booked and are open to adults and children over the age of 12. The tours take a look behind the scenes as they create their future whisky, and allow a taste of the evolving spirit and a cocktail in the bar.

Visits normally include coffee and cake or lunch. Some are designed specifically for visitors from Tobermory, who can come straight to Ncn’ean by boat.

Rahoy Hills Wildlife Reserve

The 1700 hectare Rahoy Hills Reserve is managed for its wildlife value by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, The easiest access to the reserve is from Acharn, where cars may be parked at the start of the track up the Black Glen. Guided walks are available during the summer months.

Silica Sand Mine

On the shores of Loch Aline, now renamed Lochaline Quartz Sand Ltd, is one of the main employers in the area.

Walking

There are various opportunities for walkers of all abilities throughout the area, many offering spectacular views such as the Savary circuit where you follow the Savary burn and walk through woodland.

War Memorial

Set on the hill in the centre of the village overlooking Loch Aline and the Sound of Mull this monument is dedicated to those who gave their lives in WW1.

WildlifeWildlife

There is an abundance of wildlife throughout the area including red deer, pine marten, wild cat and otter.  Bird life including the magnificent Golden eagle and Sea eagle, and marine life are also in evidence and porpoises are regularly spotted chasing the ferry and other boats.
